How can we help?

Reading and signing in

Is NeatRead free to read?

Yes. Free posts are open to everyone. Some posts ask you to sign in, which is free. Some are for paying members of that publication.

Do I need a password?

No. We email you a one-time sign-in link. You can also sign in with Google.

Can I put NeatRead on my phone’s home screen?

Yes. It opens like an app, full screen, without the browser bar.

iPhone or iPad (Safari): open NeatRead, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), scroll down, tap Add to Home Screen, then tap Add.

Android (Chrome): open NeatRead, tap the ⋮ menu at the top right, tap Add to Home screen or Install app, then tap Add or Install.

Each publication gets its own icon. You need an internet connection to read. On iPhone, you may need to sign in once more inside the home-screen app.

Why was I signed out?

An account can be signed in on up to 3 devices at once. Signing in on another one signs out the device you signed in on longest ago. Sign in again to carry on.

How do I find more to read?

Browse Discover for posts from every publication on NeatRead. Once you are signed in, Your feed shows the posts you started and new posts from every publication you joined.

Can I comment or vote?

Yes. Sign in to comment on any post you can read in full, star the posts you like and vote in polls.

Can I read in Chinese or English?

Yes. Switch the language at the bottom of any page. Posts with a translation open in your language, with a link back to the original.

Can I save posts for later?

Yes. Star the posts you like and save the ones you want to finish later.

Will NeatRead remember where I stopped?

Yes, when you are signed in. Your place in each post is kept, and the home page and Your feed offer to pick up where you left off. A place you don’t come back to is forgotten after 120 days.

Can I highlight passages and take notes?

Yes. Sign in, select some text in a post and press Highlight or Add note. Your highlights and notes are private and listed under Saved, in Highlights and notes. Press Share quote to send a link that opens the post at that passage.

Can I listen to a post?

Yes, when the writer has added audio. Press play and keep scrolling.

Can I make the text bigger?

Yes. Press Aa on any post to pick from five text sizes, normal or relaxed line spacing, a narrow or wide column, and the Auto, Light, Sepia, Dark or E-ink theme. Your choices stay for every post. Press Focus to hide everything but the title and the text.

Can I read on a Kindle, Kobo or other e-reader?

Yes, two ways.

In the e-reader’s browser: open NeatRead and it switches to the E-ink theme, with no pictures in lists and pages that turn instead of scroll. Tap either side, swipe, or press the page buttons. You can turn pages on a phone or tablet too: press Aa and choose Turn pages.

As an ebook: under any post you can read in full, press Download EPUB in the Read offline box. It opens in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most ebook apps, and the box has the steps for Send to Kindle.

Email, money and privacy

What is the weekly recap?

One short email every week with a publication’s most-read posts of the week. It comes on when you join. Turn it off in one click, or from your account page.

Will I get too much email?

No. You choose what you get from each publication, and every email has an unsubscribe link.

Can I cancel and get money back?

Paid plans are not on sale yet, so there is nothing to cancel. Once they are, you can cancel any time by asking the publication or writing to support@neatread.net, and ask for a refund of the unused part of your period, as the Terms set out.

Can I support a writer directly?

Yes, if the writer has added a support link. Press Support under one of their posts or on their author page, and you pay them on their own page, such as Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee or PayPal. The money goes straight to the writer and NeatRead takes nothing. NeatRead doesn’t handle the payment, so for a receipt or a refund, ask the writer or that service.

Can I invite a friend?

Yes. Share your link from the Invite page. The writer sees that you brought them in.

What does NeatRead do with my data?

It uses your data to sign you in, give you the posts you have access to and send the emails you chose. Detailed reading activity is kept for 120 days, then only totals that do not identify you. Download your data or delete your account from your account page. The full story is in the Privacy Policy.
